The Draw for 2018 will open on January 2nd, 2018 at 12pm EST. Interested candidates will have 30 days to enter into the draw before it closes on February 2nd, 2018 at 12pm EST. Changes to the Parental Draw for 2018 The IRCC is making changes to the draw for 2018 to ensure only candidates who meet the Minimum Necessary Income requirement will be allowed to enter into the draw this year. Last year was the first time the Parental Draw was introduced and the IRCC rushed to implement the new program, announcing it on Dec 23, 2017- just one week before it was launched. The end result of the poor planning was no screening process to eliminate ineligible candidates.
Over 90% of candidates who were selected in the draw last year where ineligible to sponsor for a variety of reasons:
Did not meet the MNI for their family size- must have 3 Canadian tax returns for the 3 previous years which meets the MNI level for your family size.
Not a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
Trying to Sponsor a Family member other than a Parent or Grandparent
In order to enter the draw for 2018, the IRCC will have a questionnaire to conduct a self-assessment and determine eligibility. Only after it is determined a candidate is eligible, they will be allowed to enter into the draw. These changes will ensure only eligible candidates will be selected and invited to apply, making the program more efficient.
